MVSU Graduate Named Superintendent in Meridian

Dr. Amy Jemison-CarterThe Meridian Public School District board unanimously approved Dr. Amy Jemison-Carter as the next superintendent.

Carter has been working right next to current superintendent, Dr. Alvin Taylor, as assistant superintendent for the past five years. “I’m really excited about continuing the work we have started. I will be working closely with our amazing group of teachers and our wonderful students as we move forward to the next level,” Carter says.

Dr. Taylor says he is excited about Dr. Carter taking over his position.
“She’s been with us every step of the way. She’s been my right arm since my first day on the job here. She’s played a pivotal role in turning things around here,” Taylor says.

Board president Marvis Killingsworth says the Mississippi School Boards Association conducted 21 interviews based on criteria set by the Meridian Public School District. In an executive session, The Meridian school board met to conduct their only interview with one of the candidates, Dr. Carter. Killingsworth says she met the criteria and is already familiar with Meridian.

Dr. Carter is a native of Jackson, MS and a graduate of Murrah High School. She is a 1993 graduate of MVSU. Carter has worked in the Meridian School District since 1994. She has worked as a classroom teacher, building level administrator and several district level positions. Dr. Carter currently serves as Assistant Superintendent of Accountability, Operations, Student Services/Title IX Coordinator. She says she knows the district well.

“It’s my plan to continue to work with our teachers and administrators and just moving the district to the next level,” Carter says.

She is married to David Carter.

Dr. Carter will begin July 1, 2016.
